Job Summary

The Emergency Department Registered Nurse practices independently to deliver safe, high-quality, and compassionate care to patients experiencing acute or life-threatening medical emergencies. Utilizing clinical reasoning and the nursing process, the ED RN manages routine and complex patient care situations, anticipates clinical contingencies, and effectively delegates tasks to auxiliary care team members. This role focuses on optimizing patient outcomes in a fast-paced environment while providing critical support to patients and their families.

Responsibilities

  • Comprehensive Patient Care: Assess, diagnose, plan, implement, and evaluate individualized nursing care plans for assigned emergency patients in alignment with standard professional nursing practices.
  • Medication & Treatment Administration: Safely administer medications, blood products, and advanced emergency treatments according to established clinical protocols; continuously monitor patients for treatment efficacy and side effects.
  • Documentation Excellence: Maintain accurate, real-time electronic health records (EHR) documenting patient history, clinical symptoms, vital signs, interventions, and care responses.
  • Holistic Support: Address complex psychological, emotional, cultural, and social needs of emergency patients and families during high-stress situations.
  • Patient & Family Education: Assess learning barriers and provide clear discharge instructions or crisis education to patients, family members, and designated caregivers.
  • Clinical Collaboration: Coordinate seamlessly with emergency physicians, trauma teams, mid-level providers, and ancillary departments to ensure safe and efficient patient throughput.

Job Requirements

Education & Experience

  • Education: Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing. Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is preferred.
  • Experience: One (1) year of recent clinical experience in an Emergency Department or similar high-acuity acute care setting is preferred.

Licenses & Core Certifications

  • RN License: Current, unencumbered Registered Nurse license in the state of employment, or valid compact/multi-state license.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS): Required upon hire (American Heart Association or American Red Cross).

Position-Specific Advanced Certifications

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
  • Trauma Nurse Core Curriculum (TNCC)
  • (Note: Refer to the Credential Grace Periods below for timeline expectations if you do not currently hold these certifications).

Onboarding & Orientation Expectations

  • Comprehensive Orientation: All experienced RN hires will complete a structured clinical orientation program within their first 30 days.
  • Preceptorship & Competency Validation: New hires will be paired with a trained clinical preceptor. Initial onboarding and Emergency Department-specific competencies will be systematically validated at the bedside.
  • Residency Support: Newly licensed RNs or nurses transitioning into the specialty will participate in a structured transition-to-practice residency track, with skills tracking documented dynamically alongside a preceptor.

Credential Grace Periods

Required certifications must be obtained within the specified timeframes based on your experience level in this specialty.

  • Experienced Nurse: Holds at least 1 year of acute care clinical experience in a similar service line within the past 3 years.
  • Nurse New to the Specialty: A new graduate, or an experienced nurse with less than 1 year of acute care clinical experience in this specific service line within the past 3 years.
